Sri Shaligrama Stotram

Yudhiṣṭhira said:


“O Lord of gods, God of gods, Supreme worship-worthy One,
that entire method of worship I desire to hear.
Tell me, O Supreme Person (Puruṣottama).”


Śrī Bhagavān said:


"On the Gandakī, on the northern bank,
on the southern side of the king of mountains (Himalaya),
extending ten yojanas,
there is a great sacred region on Earth.


There, Śāligrāma is indeed the Lord,
and Dvāravatī is the Goddess.
Where the union of both is present,
there is liberation—without doubt.


Where the Śāligrāma stone is present,
and where the Dvāravatī stone is present,
where the union of both occurs,
there is liberation—without doubt.


For sins committed over many births,
one who desires atonement—
the water of the Śāligrāma removes sins;
unto that I offer obeisance.


Removal of untimely death,
destruction of all diseases—
having drunk the water from the feet of Vishnu,
I place it upon my head.


The water situated in the conch,
offered upon Keśava,
when applied to the limbs constantly,
destroys even sins such as brahma-hatyā.

One who daily drinks the bathing water,
especially from a chakra-marked Śāligrāma placed upon the head,
that water, like nectar after purification,
removes brahma-hatyā.


Thousands of Agniṣṭoma sacrifices,
and hundreds of Vājapeya sacrifices—
their proper fruit is obtained
by honoring the offerings of Vishnu.


Food offerings combined with Tulsi,
mixed with the water from the feet of Vishnu—
one who consumes this daily
in the presence of Murāri,
obtains the merit of countless yajñas.


Even if broken, cracked, without opening, burnt, or marked—
wherever the Śāligrāma stone is present,
there is no fault in its worship.


No mantra, no formal worship,
no pilgrimage, and no meditation—
no hymn, no ritual offerings—
are required for Śāligrāma worship.


Sins such as brahma-hatyā,
arising from mind, speech, and action—
all of these are quickly destroyed
by the worship of the Śāligrāma.


Of many colors and forms,
adorned with various characteristics,
by such supreme grace,
one attains strength and the grace of Lakṣmī’s Lord.


Nārāyaṇa is present there as the Lord,
identified by the chakra and other marks;
by such supreme grace,
one attains strength and divine favor.


Where a black stone is present,
in which a subtle chakra is seen,
it grants good fortune, progeny,
and gives all prosperity.


Seeing the marks of Vāsudeva,
one becomes freed from sins.

Forms such as Śrīdhara, Varāha, Vāmana,
and others are seen.


Forms marked like a cow’s hoof,
and forms of Varāha and Vāmana
are perceived.


Of yellow color, it is divine;
of red color, it brings fear.
As Narasiṁha, the Lord appears,
and is known as a giver of liberation.


Where conch, discus, mace, and tortoise marks are seen,
there are divine indications.
Conch-colored forms, and markings on the left side,
indicate divine characteristics.


Damodara is known as large,
with a central chakra established.
With a full opening, narrow passage,
and a yellow line visible.


Umbrella-shaped brings rulership;
round brings great prosperity;
flat brings great sorrow;
spear-like brings certain conflict.


On the forehead, serpent-like marking;
on the head, golden appearance;
golden-colored chakras—
these are marks of Vāmadeva.


On the left side, two chakras,
dark or tawny in color—
these are seen as Lakṣmī-Narasiṁha forms.


Long-shaped brings poverty;
tawny color brings loss;
with attached chakra comes disease;
split form leads to death.


The water from the Lord’s feet,
and sacred remnants,
should always be placed upon the head,
mixed with Tulsi water of Vishnu.


For thousands of crores of kalpas,
one resides in Vaikuṇṭha;
worship of the Śāligrāma destroys
crores of sins.


Therefore one should always worship,
meditating and honoring continually.
Whoever recites this Śāligrāma Stotram,
O best of the twice-born.


He goes to the supreme abode
where Lord Hari resides;
freed from all sins,
he reaches the world of Vishnu.


The ten incarnations of the Lord
appear in various forms;
one obtains desired results, including sovereignty,
by the proper worship of Vishnu.


Millions of brahma-hatyā sins,
and countless other sins—
all are destroyed
by honoring the offerings of Vishnu.


By drinking the water from Vishnu’s feet,
the sins of millions of births are destroyed.


Thus ends the Śrī Śāligrāma Stotram of the Bhaviṣyottara Purāṇa.
